Detection of Pseudo-nitzschia Spp Toxic Blooms Using Meris Images on the Galician Coast

چکیده
Periodic blooms of Pseudonitzschia spp. in Galician coastal areas have caused virtual collapse of ecosystems with accomp anying serious economic impacts. The aim of this work is the study of the physical environment of a coastal system correlating different bands of MERIS data with in situ chlorophyll data provided by the Marine Environment Quality Control Centre (CCMM) during a study period associated to Pseudo-nitzschia spp. toxic blooms related to coastal upwelling events (May-June 2003). This work tries to establish the foundations for the future development of algorithms for the study of the primary production and the identification of Pseudo-nitzshia spp toxic blooms in coastal waters case II making use of the great potential of the FR MERIS products, with high spatial and spectral resolution. The study is a part of the ESA project AO623, which is intended to study changing shorelines-beaches seasonally and annually, together with suspended matter discharged into coastal waters and pigments related to algae blooms.

Thin layers of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and the fate of Dinophysis acuminata during an upwelling–downwelling cycle in a Galician Rı́a
Fine-resolution measurements of phytoplankton and physical parameters were made from 31 May to 14 June 2005 in the Rı́a de Pontevedra (Spain), which is subject to seasonal upwelling. The main objective of this work was to elucidate physical–biological interactions leading to subsurface aggregations of toxin-producing microalgae (Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and Dinophysis spp.). A sequence of upwelling...
متن کاملDevelopment and environmental application of a genus-speciWc quantitative PCR approach for Pseudo-nitzschia species
Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for the identiWcation and quantiWcation of microbes has become a common tool for the study of harmful algal blooms (HABs). We developed a qPCR method for the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Several species of this genus form toxic blooms through the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). Outbreaks of toxicity attributed to DA along the US wes...
متن کاملDomoic acid: a fascinating marine toxin.
There are indications that toxic algal blooms are increasing because of pollution of coastal waters and worldwide shipping. This mini-review deals with the marine biotoxin domoic acid, also known as amnesic shellfish poison, and its main producing pennate diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia (Bacillariophyceae). Besides contamination of seafood, these organisms have also been involved in human and mar...
متن کاملEmpirical models of toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia blooms: Potential use as a remote detection tool in the Santa Barbara Channel
The Santa Barbara Channel, CA is a highly productive regionwherewind-driven upwelling andmesoscale eddies are important processes driving phytoplankton blooms. In recent years, the spring bloomhas been dominated by the neurotoxin-producing diatom, Pseudo-nitzschia spp. In this paper, we relate a 1.5-year time series of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. abundance and domoic acid concentration to physical, c...
متن کاملRapid downward transport of the neurotoxin domoic acid in coastal waters
Toxic phytoplankton blooms threaten coastlines worldwide by diminishing beach quality and adversely affecting marine ecosystems and human health1,2. The common diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia consists of several species known to produce the neurotoxin domoic acid3. Recent studies suggest that algal blooms dominated by Pseudo-nitzschia are increasing in frequency and duration owing to changes in c...
